News from the Kitchen

DID YOU KNOW...

The Spartanburg Soup Kitchen (SSK), serves more than 500 meals each day to men, women and children. Warm meals of nourishment, kindness, and hope lift spirits 365 days a year...in good times and bad.

The SSK opened in 1982. For 29 years, it has operated out of a 300-square-foot kitchen in the Second Presbyterian Church gymnasium.

Guests pour into the Spartanburg Soup Kitchen for a hot noonday meal.

In the past two years, due to the economic downturn, the number of guests eating at the SSK has increased more than 40%.

South Carolina is ranked 47th in the nation in unemployment and has the sixth highest rate (nationwide) of food insecurity for women and children.

The Spartanburg Soup Kitchen has only three part-time paid staff members and more than 600 volunteers.

In 2009, the SSK received it's 501(c)(3) non-profit status and had volunteers donate 72,635 hours of service to the Soup Kitchen.

The Spartanburg Soup Kitchen relies solely on the donation of time, money, and goods from individuals, groups, and businesses. We receive no government funding.
